A controlled trial of red and near-infrared light reported better skin complexion, fewer fine lines and higher collagen density (Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014). See also Avci et al., 2013.
THE SCIENCE
Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation, uses red and near-infrared light to raise cellular energy production. It has been studied since 1967. Here is what the research reports, with sources you can check.
In 1967, Hungarian physician Endre Mester saw that low-level red light sped up hair regrowth and wound healing in mice. NASA-funded research then confirmed that red and near-infrared LEDs raise cellular energy production and wound healing (Whelan et al., 2001).
Mitochondria absorb light in the red and near-infrared range, which raises ATP production and modulates inflammation (Hamblin, 2017). That is the mechanism behind the reported effects on skin, muscle recovery and pain.

A review of human studies found that photobiomodulation before or after exercise can reduce muscle fatigue and damage markers and improve recovery (Ferraresi, Huang and Hamblin, 2016).

In elite female athletes, 14 nights of whole-body red light exposure improved sleep quality and serum melatonin against placebo (Zhao et al., 2012).
